Rialda Jašarević, Founder of BASIC Center: “Believe in yourself and your vision. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth.”
Stories of successful female entrepreneurs often inspire us, and the story of Rialda Jašarević, the founder of BASIC Center (Business Advanced Start-up Initiative Center), is no exception.
With over a decade of experience in project management and business consulting, Rialda helped hundreds of small and medium enterprises, associations, and start-up initiatives secure funding and transform their ideas into successful projects.
In this interview with Rialda Jašarević, we learn how she turned her vision into a brand recognized for its success, dedication, and results.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I found inspiration in my desire to create something with long-term impact, not just for myself but for the wider community. I identified a market niche and its untapped potential, particularly among young people and smallto medium enterprises. I realized I wanted to be part of the solution that supports growth and sustainable development in these segments. BASIC Center was born from the belief that every entrepreneur deserves a chance and every good idea deserves the space to grow.
What is your family’s entrepreneurial background?
My father is an entrepreneur, though his work isn’t directly related to mine. Still, he was my greatest teacher. While he didn’t expect me to follow his path, his qualities of dedication, courage, and persistence shaped my approach to business. Through the support provided by our Entrepreneurial Academy, my brother and sister-in-law started their own business, which now employs more than ten people. Today, I can proudly say we’re an entrepreneurial family, and even though we have little time for rest, we always find time for each other.
What has been your biggest challenge in business so far, and how did you overcome it?
One of our greatest challenges was building trust with clients and partners, particularly in the early stages when BASIC Center didn’t have an established reputation yet. Many entrepreneurs were unaccustomed to paying for services, believing they should be free. Overcoming this required transparency, consistency, and a commitment to providing high-quality services. By clearly communicating the value we offer and showcasing our clients’ successes, we built stable business relationships and trust, which are crucial for long-term collaboration.
How did you secure initial funding? Did you receive any financial grant?
To secure initial funding, we used various sources of support. Applying for grants was a key step that enabled us to launch and stabilize the business. These financial grants were crucial during the start-up phase, allowing us to invest in the necessary equipment, education, and promotion of our services.
How do you handle failure or obstacles?
Instead of focusing on the negatives, I see obstacles as opportunities for growth. For example, if a desired result isn’t achieved, I analyze what went wrong, set concrete goals for improvement, and adjust my approach. I also consult with mentors and partners, as their perspectives often lead me to solutions I might not have considered.
What advice would you give young people looking to start a business in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Be patient and persistent. Starting a business is a process that requires hard work and courage to face uncertainties and obstacles. Thoroughly research the market and develop a clear business plan, while staying adaptable to changes. Networking and building relationships with partners and investors is key, as is seeking mentorship. Take advantage of grants and financial support available for new entrepreneurs.
What state or city-level initiatives could help overcome obstacles for young entrepreneurs?
Simplifying administrative processes and increasing access to financial incentives would be highly beneficial. Additionally, focusing on entrepreneurial education in schools and universities could make a significant difference.
What unique challenges have you experienced as a woman in business, and how did you overcome them?
To be honest, I haven’t personally faced significant challenges as a woman in business. The key is to stay focused on your goals and not let stereotypes distract you.
What advice would you give to other women aspiring to become entrepreneurs?
Believe in yourself and your vision. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Stay focused on your long-term goals, don’t let gender become a barrier, and always strive to achieve your objectives.
What initiatives or changes are key to increasing women’s representation in entrepreneurship?
Several changes are crucial. First, we need to shift societal norms that underestimate women’s potential. Initiatives that help women balance professional and personal life, create networks connecting them with investors and funding, and improve access to training are also vital. These measures strengthen entrepreneurial skills and build confidence in business leadership.
How long did it take for your business to become profitable?
Thanks to careful planning, market analysis, cost optimization, and effective use of available financial resources, BASIC Center became profitable within its first year.
What do you enjoy most about running this business?
I enjoy having the opportunity to directly impact the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Bosnia and Herzegovina. My team and I help small and medium businesses overcome operational challenges and support ambitious individuals in starting and registering their businesses. Through our entrepreneurial education programs, we prepare future entrepreneurs for the market's challenges. Every success our clients achieve is proof of our work's real impact. Additionally, the challenges of entrepreneurship continually motivate me to grow as a leader.
